Dress Gordon - The family name Gordon is territorial and those who took the name are believed to have been of Anglo-Norman descent. The wild boar's head appears on the Gordon Arms as, legend says, the first Gordon saved a Scottish King from an attacking boar.
Modern Douglas - The earliest recorded Douglas seems to be William of Douglas, who's name appears as a witness to charters between 1175 and 1211, but it is not known who he was descended from.
Royal Stewart - The Stewars appear to be descended from an ancient family who acquired lands in England after the Norman Conquest and moved to Scotland when David I ascended to the Scottish Throne. There, the family were granted extensive estates in Renfrewshire and East Lothian.
Modern Scottish National - The Modern Scottish National is not associated with any family in particular but is generally worn as Scotland's national tartan.
